Ethan Iverson of The Bad Plus to Perform
By Alex W. Rodriguez for The Star-Ledger
I will be at Iverson’s gig at Smalls next week — come for the Tuesday set and help me celebrate my 26th birthday! Other performances featured in this week’s column include Wayne Escoffrey at William Paterson and the Mike Bond Quartet in New Brunswick.

Reed-Gordon Duo to play at Rutgers-Newark
by Alex W. Rodriguez for the Star-Ledger
Listings for this week include Wcliffe Gordon (above) with Eric Reed, Vic Juris and The Count Basie Orchestra. Gary Burton at the Blue Note is the best reason to cross the Hudson. Leave a comment if you make it to any of the shows — I’ll be on campus for the Reed-Gordon duo for sure, I probably listened to their first duo record We 1,000 times as a high school sophomore.

This week’s roundup features upcoming concerts by Winard Harper (above), Steve Turre, Victor Wooten, Ralph Bowen and others. My “Best Reason to Cross the Hudson” is Rudresh Mahanthappa and Bunky Green at the Jazz Standard.

Jason Moran Plays Village Vanguard
by Alex W. Rodriguez for the Star-Ledger
This is the first in what will be a weekly column that I’ll be writing for the Ledger highlighting local New Jersey jazz events, plus one NY-based show (my “Best Reason to Cross the Husdon.”) Moran’s Vanguard appearance easily wins that award this week. Watch this space for future editions of the weekly roundup.

By Alex W. Rodriguez for the Star-Ledger
